![]() You must make a flagship Sonic platformer that delivered what it intend to do and some great Sonic spinoffs such as Sonic Spinball, Sonic Golf, Sonic RPG, Sonic Tennis, Sonic Drift, Sonic Paint, Sonic Fighters, etc., to hold fans over. If you want Sonic to be bigger than Mario, then you must make Sonic better than Mario. The games seems to go up a few steps and down many steps. The movies were good but they are a bit far from the games. The first two were very successful, and even though The Mario Bros Movie technically outdid them on a box office performance, I feel that the quality of that overall film itself just wasn't on the same level as the Sonic movies. Superstars was not terrible, but not good either and certainly not the correct direction for the series.Īs for movies? They are ahead of Mario there anyway. I think they are the only team that are capable of understanding what classic sonic is about and how to evolve the 2D games beyond its remit. ![]() Bad Sonic Team.Īs for classic titles - I’d advise them to just go back to Evening Star (Mania). ![]() A sequel can help iron out these problems since they have a core idea to work with. The first game in concept was really very good (but flawed on a number of levels) so when you compare it to something like Mario Odyssey you can see the lack of polish. In any case, my take is that for the games (if they want them to succeed on quality alone) then they need to first focus all in on Frontiers 2. “As a Sonic Lover” - that subtitle tickles me □ I mean, I love me some Mario but it doesn’t elicit much emotion nor food for conversation, nor do I have any connection to the characters past Luigi. Sonic games just seem naturally more divisive, and personally that also makes him more interesting to talk about. Just feels like when Sonic surpasses Mario it’ll still be so different from each other that only the question of quality assurance will be cleared up. Mario has all the spin-offs that used to bring a different vibe but it’s all come closer together lately. Nothing wrong with that, and classic sonic has a bit more of a mix of goofy and cool that’s a bit closer to Mario’s vibe, but when Sonic goes beyond Mario in quality it’d still be something wildly different that might not have the same wide appeal even at its best. Mario is definitely a gameplay first (and gameplay only most of the time) kind of franchise, while Sonic has more stories to tell alongside said gameplay. Sonic actually has something to say, no matter how dumb it gets, and Mario just kind of passes through and afterwards there’s nothing more to think about. Sonic gets me hyped up (at least the super sonic sections in Frontiers hit highs Mario never reached in that regard) and Mario never really goes there, instead being more happy and jolly. Sonic Frontiers was a pretty good showing of what Sonic brings that Mario doesn’t. In platformers they’re kind of similar but Sonic’s emphasis on speed has those games designed completely differently and with a more challenging core than Mario’s. In the 3D space Sonic brings something so unlike Mario that it’d be hard to even compare the two. Sega nowadays releases maybe 1 new Sonic game every 2 years outside of mobile, so they can't afford failures the same way. Mario has fallen on his face before, in other ways, but there's so many Mario games, it doesn't matter. They need to find something that works for them and understand how to innovate in non-humiliating ways. ![]() They also have this thing called "quality control" and understand how to make sequels, while Sonic just veers wildly in whatever direction, hoping something sticks. ![]() I mean, I'd take quite a few 2D Sonic games over any NSMB game at this point, and I might even suggest that in 20, Sonic had the better 3D platformer game (though this is based on the assumption that Sonic Adventure 2 has held up at all, an opinion even I'm uncertain of).īut at the same time, the level of quantity and quality for Mario is just a lot higher and is a near unattainable level for any game series. Honestly for how as often as Sonic falls on its face, I don't think this is as comically unachievable as people might assume. ![]()
